                Angela Trimbur’s Balletcore™ Company Adds Closing Night Performance

New York’s Beloved Cosplay Ballet Company to perform April 10th-11th at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center

Heralded by the New York Times as “New York’s most whimsical dance teacher,” choreographer, actress, and It Girl Angela Trimbur has created a cosplay ballet company consisting of 90 adult dancers who will take the stage in the 2nd Annual Balletcore™ Recital, Quest to Dream, on April 10th and 11th at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in Long Island City. Tickets for Opening Night April 10th recital sold out immediately, and a Closing Night performance was added by popular demand.

Angela Trimbur AKA Miss Angela, teaches in character, cosplaying as a strict ballet director, and encourages the participants (AKA The Company) to embrace the characters of professional ballerinas (while throwing out any usual ballet technique perfectionism). And every year the classes lead up to a big “audition” (where everyone makes it in) and they put on a real deal recital. The recital builds upon a thriving movement of adults reclaiming childhood extracurriculars and spaces for their own catharsis (Ballet, in particular, has proven ripe for such a thing, with its overwhelming whiteness, engendered perfectionism, and obsession with thinness). Longing for girlish spaces that centered punk rock absurdity and bodily freedom, Trimbur set out to recreate the happy chaos of the recital environment—the backstage whoosh-ing of aerosol cans, clacking of makeup compacts, and rouge stains on tights—that had dazzled her as a child.

Audience members can expect high-energy (and, at times, comedic) choreography with empowering storylines set to classical ballet music (from The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty).  At a time when the bodily autonomy of women and LGBTQIA+ people are increasingly under attack, Quest to Dream encourages dancers and audience members alike to become the best, bravest, most true version of themselves.

Balletcore™, created by Angela Trimbur, is a playful, anti-perfection dance experience that blends the joy and aesthetics of ballet with inner child healing—encouraging adults of all levels to lean into the cosplay of the art form leading up to a theatrical recital where dancers are invited to fully embody the fantasy of being a professional ballerina, no matter their background or past.

Angela Trimbur is an actor, dancer, and choreographer who has appeared in HBO’s SEARCH PARTY, the Emmy Winning film QUIZ LADY, and had her two most recent dance films directed by Evan Rachel Wood and Sage Bennett, premiere on NOWNESS. Angela lives in New York City and is available for interview.
